In fact, nearly every single family home in Canada has a working gas or wood burning fireplace, installed at great expense.  When you consider the fireplace unit, the chimney, a mantle and the cost of installation, it's not uncommon for the price to soar in excess of $5,000-$10,000.  With a few exceptions, nearly everyone who owns a fireplace uses it to create ambiance, not to heat their home. Some older style brick fireplaces suck the heat right out of your home.
