Pond Maintenance
Q. Hi,
Nice website. My pond has a black EPDM rubber liner. I wanted to add rocks and gravel to make it look more natural. I am worried that added rocks will make it harder to clean. What should I do - rock or no rocks?
A. Thanks! If you have a smooth bottomed pond with no rocks or gravel you will automatically buy into this myth. Ponds with no rocks or gravel accumulate a huge amount of muck and grime and require frequent cleaning. It therefore seems logical that by adding rocks and gravel, you would be adding to your maintenance problem since you would now have to deal with cleaning in and around the rocks and gravel too. Makes sense, right? Wrong. Here's why.
Rocks and gravel offer a natural place for aerobic bacteria to colonize and set up Mother Nature's housekeeping service. This bacteria breaks down fish waste and plant debris before it accumulates and turns into sludge. By adding rocks and gravel you create a natural ecosystem that keeps your pond crystal clear, your plants looking beautiful, and your fish healthy and happy. Mother Nature has a great way of cleaning up after herself, leaving you with a worry-free water garden.
